How to send cases from your scanner to Dental 3D Lab

Get your scans out of iTero, Medit, 3Shape and other scanners, and attach the right files for each product so the designer can start right away.

About this guide This page explains how to send a case from your scanner platform (iTero, Medit, 3Shape and others) to Dental 3D Lab, and which files each product needs. To learn how our own web portal works (cases, design review, chat, invoices), see the Client Portal page.

Step 1: Create your free portal account

Open your account today, before your first case is ready. Registration takes about two minutes and costs nothing. Approval takes up to 1 business day, so if you register now your account will be active by the time you have a scan to send. Your first order also includes a free trial: 2 crown or bridge units.

Step 2: Get your scans out of your scanner

Menu names can differ between software versions. If an option looks different, check your scanner vendor's help or ask us.

iTero (MyiTero)

  1. Log in at myitero.com, open the Patients tab and select the scan you want to send.
  2. Click Export and choose Open Shell, Files per Arch (arches oriented in occlusion) and the file type STL (no colour), or PLY if you want colour.
  3. Download the zip, extract the files and upload them to your case in the Dental 3D Lab portal.

Medit (Medit Link)

Send directly in Medit Link
  1. In Medit Link open Partners, search for "Dental 3D Lab" (or our email [email protected]) and click Request Partnership. If you cannot find us, use Invite Partner.
  2. We accept the request, then you can choose us as the lab when you create an order.
  3. The order arrives in our In Box with your scans and order form, and we start designing once we accept it.
Or export and upload
  1. Open the case in Medit Link (Work Box), click the three-dot icon next to the scan data and choose Export.
  2. Select STL, PLY or OBJ. PLY or OBJ keep colour. Export is done in Medit Link, not in the scanner app.
  3. Upload the exported files to your case in the portal.

3Shape (TRIOS / Unite)

  1. In Unite open the case, click the three-dot menu and choose Export, then Scan. Only processed or sent scans can be exported.
  2. Change Save as type from DCM to STL, or PLY if your software version offers it. DCM can be opened only in 3Shape software.
  3. Upload the exported files to your case in the portal.

Dentsply Sirona (Primescan / Omnicam)

  1. Export the scan as open STL (or OBJ) from the Connect software.
  2. Check that upper, lower and bite scans are exported as separate files.
  3. Upload the exported files to your case in the portal.

Other scanners (Planmeca, Shining 3D, DEXIS, Launca and more)

  1. Use the export function in your scanner software and save the scans as STL, PLY or OBJ.
  2. Keep upper, lower and bite scans as separate files.
  3. Upload the exported files to your case in the portal.

Steps 3 and 4: What to attach for each product, then send

Choose the product from our price list, then attach the items below. Send the case through your scanner's partner connection where we offer one, or upload it at portal.dental3dlab.com.

  2. Upload the case instructions or Rx form with the implant details (brand, type, size), the implant library and the scanbody information. Include OVD adjustment if needed
  3. Upload the scan files: preparation, pre-preparation, antagonist, occlusion (bite) and the marker scans (scanbody, abutment scan)
  4. Upload patient photos (*.jpg) wearing the temporary teeth, for reference
If needed
  • Implant Tissue Model, if you want a model with soft tissue

Implant Verification Jigs: scan the seated scanbodies and the surrounding tissue, and tell us the implant system and scanbody type. Realtime Implant Design (Surgical Support): contact us before the surgery to agree a time, and send the planning files in advance (CBCT as *.dcm, intraoral scans, implant system and library).

Waxup

Stackable guides: send a CBCT covering the full arch plus at least 5 mm of the opposing arch (slice thickness 0.4 mm or finer), intraoral scans of both arches and a bite registration. For a patient with an existing denture, also send a scan of the denture, or a CBCT with the denture and radiopaque markers (dual scan). In the Rx state whether the guide is tooth-, mucosa- or bone-supported, the implant system and the planned prosthesis.

Implant Impression Tray: also provide the implant library and the marker scans (scanbody, abutment scan). Composite Fulfilling Tray: if you have a waxup file, upload it with the scans; if not, describe the tooth shapes you want and we create the waxup first. Denture Impression Tray: scan the edentulous arches and state any spacer or handle preference. Dental Bite Registration: state the bite type you want (for example centric relation).

Bite Adjustment and Reline / Refit / Repair: upload a scan of the existing denture and describe the change you want. For a denture with a patient picture, upload patient photos (*.jpg): full-face smile, not tilted, and retractor images.

Before you order

  • Tell us which design software you prefer. We work with exocad 3.1 and 3Shape 2020 and 2021.
  • Follow up in the portal and the group chat to track progress on your case.
  • Crown & Bridge and Waxup cases over 5 units received after 3 PM (Vietnam time) may be turned around the next day.
  • Please tell us if a case is urgent.
  • Scan file types we accept: *.stl, *.ply, *.xml, *.dcm, *.mtl, *.obj (3D object).
  • Privacy: use your own patient code in file names, notes and chat instead of the patient name, and send CBCT only after anonymising it.

Frequently asked questions

Which scan file formats can I upload? We accept *.stl, *.ply, *.xml, *.dcm, *.mtl and *.obj files. STL works with every scanner. Use PLY or OBJ when you want to keep colour.
My scanner is not listed. Can I still send cases? Yes. Any scanner that can export STL, PLY or OBJ works. Export the files from your scanner software and upload them to your case in the portal.
Do I need to install anything to send a case? No. The portal runs in your browser at portal.dental3dlab.com. You create the case, upload your scan files and the Rx form, and follow progress there.
Where do I find product names and prices? The Price List tab inside the portal lists every product and service with its price. Product names in this guide match the order form exactly.
